Visiting Silves in June

# Silves in June: What It’s Actually Like

June is when the Algarve starts properly cooking, and Silves is no exception. You’re looking at temperatures that regularly hit the low-to-mid 30s Celsius, sometimes pushing higher, and the sun is genuinely intense by mid-morning. The town sits inland, away from any coastal breeze, which means the heat feels more concentrated than at the beach resorts. This isn’t a problem if you’re prepared for it, but walking up to the castle at 2pm will make you question your decisions.

Rainfall in June is pretty minimal historically – you’re unlikely to see much more than the occasional brief shower, if anything at all. Pack sunscreen rather than a rain jacket.

Crowds are interesting here. Silves doesn’t attract the same numbers as Albufeira or Lagos, so it never feels overwhelmed even in summer. June sits in that reasonable window before the real peak of July and August, so you’ll share the castle and cathedral with tourists but it won’t feel like a queue situation. The town has genuine local life running alongside the visitors, which makes it feel more honest than some Algarve spots.

Everything is open in June – the Moorish castle, the cathedral, the Municipal Museum. The castle is genuinely worth your time and the views over the surrounding orange groves are lovely, though arrive early to beat the heat if nothing else.

**Is it worth visiting in June?** Yes, particularly if you’re already staying somewhere on the Algarve coast. It makes an excellent half-day trip. For the castle, the character of the old town, a decent lunch somewhere unpretentious. It’s not a place that demands a full day unless you’re archaeology-obsessed.

It suits people who want history alongside their beach holiday, couples looking for something beyond sunbathing, anyone who finds the big resort towns exhausting.

**Practical tip:** Go in the morning, before 11am ideally. The temperature difference between a 9am visit and a 1pm visit is significant, and the light on the castle walls is genuinely beautiful early on.
