# Positano in May: The Sweet Spot (With a Catch)
If someone asked me to design the ideal month to visit Positano, I’d probably land somewhere close to May. Not because it’s perfect — it isn’t — but because the balance tips noticeably in your favor compared to almost any other time of year.
The weather sits around 20°C, which sounds modest on paper but feels genuinely lovely in practice. You’re walking those brutal staircases without sweating through your shirt by 9am, the light is extraordinary in that particular Mediterranean way, and the sea is edging toward swimmable if you’re not precious about it. Expect some rain though — around 80mm across the month means you’ll likely catch a few proper downpours, not just drizzle. They tend to come and go quickly, but pack a light waterproof and don’t schedule anything rigid around sunset.
Crowds are present but manageable. May sits in that narrow window after the Easter rush but before the full summer invasion transforms every narrow lane into a shuffling queue. You can actually stop on the beach path, look out at the water, and have a thought. By July, that’s essentially impossible. Restaurants are fully open, boats are running to Capri and the Amalfi coast towns, and you won’t be turned away anywhere for lack of reservation — though booking dinner ahead is still sensible on weekends.
**Who is this month actually for?** Couples, walkers doing the Path of the Gods, anyone who wants the postcard without the punishment. It’s less ideal if you’re coming specifically to swim — the sea hovers around 18°C, which requires commitment — or if your trip depends on guaranteed sunshine.
**One practical tip:** Book your accommodation higher up the cliff rather than down near the beach. The lower you stay, the more August-like the crowds feel even in May, because the beach area fills first. Stay higher, walk down when you want the water, and walk back up when you’ve had enough. Your experience of the town changes completely.
Worth it? Genuinely, yes.
