Look, December in Selçuk is not going to give you the glossy turquoise-and-sunshine experience you’ve seen on Instagram. The temperature sits around 14°C, which sounds mild until you factor in the dampness. And there’s real rain here – over 100mm across the month, meaning you’ll likely catch several grey, properly wet days. Pack a waterproof jacket you’d actually wear, not a decorative one.

Here’s the thing though: this is when Selçuk quietly reveals itself as a real town rather than a tourist backdrop.

The crowds essentially evaporate. Ephesus, which becomes an absolute scrum of tour groups in summer, is suddenly walkable at a human pace. You can stand in the Library of Celsus without elbowing someone out of a photograph. The ruins feel more like ruins – atmospheric, slightly melancholy, appropriately ancient. Cold wind coming off the hills actually adds something. Everything is open; the site doesn’t close for winter.

The town itself functions normally because it’s a functioning town. The market still runs, the lokanta restaurants serve proper food at local prices, and you’ll actually meet people who live there rather than just fellow tourists. The Isa Bey Mosque, the Basilica of St John, the small archaeology museum – all accessible, largely to yourself.

What’s genuinely limited is beach weather at nearby Şirince or Kuşadası. That whole coastal relaxation angle doesn’t work in December. The day length is short, so you lose afternoon light earlier than you’d want for photography.

Is it worth it? For history-focused travellers, honestly yes – arguably the best month to appreciate Ephesus without it feeling like a theme park queue. For families hoping to combine ruins with swimming and sunshine, wait until May.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the town centre rather than out toward Kuşadası. In December, having proper restaurants and a warm tea house within walking distance matters more than a pool view. Several smaller family-run pensions close entirely, so confirm your booking directly before you travel.
