# Kalkan in March: Honest Thoughts

March in Kalkan sits in that awkward middle ground between “genuinely lovely” and “not quite right yet,” and whether it works for you depends almost entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is mild rather than warm. Eighteen degrees sounds pleasant on paper, and it often genuinely is — you’ll have days where you’re eating lunch outside in a light jacket feeling quietly smug about escaping northern Europe. But you’ll also have stretches where grey clouds sit over the bay for two or three days straight, and nearly 70mm of rain across the month means you should absolutely pack a proper waterproof, not just a flimsy cardigan. The sea is cold. Nobody is swimming unless they’re slightly unhinged.

The town itself is noticeably quiet, which is either the main attraction or the main problem depending on your personality. The streets aren’t crowded, you can actually look at things without being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, and you’ll get tables at restaurants without any fuss. Speaking of which, a decent chunk of restaurants and rooftop bars are still shuttered in March — owners typically start opening up properly from mid-April onward. You won’t struggle to find somewhere good to eat, but you won’t have the full picture of what Kalkan does in summer.

What does work well is the hiking. The Lycian Way is spectacular in March, the light is soft, temperatures are perfect for walking, and the wildflowers are starting to appear. If you want to explore the ruins at Patara, Xanthos or Letoon without baking, this is actually a genuinely excellent time. The old town’s winding streets are charming in any weather and worth wandering properly when you’re not being hustled along by the crowd.

Worth visiting? Yes, for certain people. Specifically: walkers, couples wanting something quiet and slightly romantic, people who find peak-season tourism exhausting, or anyone on a tighter budget given the lower prices.

**Practical tip:** Check individual restaurant opening dates before you travel. Don’t assume your shortlist from last year’s reviews will be open.
