# Lagos in February: The Off-Season Truth

Look, February in Lagos is not the postcard version. The Algarve has basically exhaled after the summer madness, and what you get is a town that actually belongs to itself again.

The weather is genuinely mixed. You’re looking at around 11 degrees, which sounds mild until the Atlantic wind gets involved and makes it feel properly cold. Pack a real jacket, not a light layer. That 50mm of rain tends to arrive in moody bursts rather than constant drizzle, so you’ll have bright clear days that feel almost cruel in their beauty, followed by an afternoon where the sky just opens up. The light in winter here is genuinely extraordinary though – golden and low, making everything look slightly cinematic.

The crowds are essentially gone. You can walk the Ponta da Piedade cliffs and have them almost entirely to yourself, which in August is simply not possible. The famous grottos and rock formations feel properly dramatic when the sea is churning and nobody else is around. That alone is worth something.

What’s actually open is the honest question. Most restaurants stay open year-round because locals eat out. The boat tours to the sea caves run reduced schedules and can cancel on rough days, so build flexibility into your plans. Some smaller beach bars and seasonal spots are shuttered. The town itself – cafes, markets, the older streets inland – functions normally and feels lived-in rather than performed.

Worth it for whom? Absolutely for hikers, photographers, and anyone who finds peak-season tourism exhausting. Couples looking for quiet work well here. Families expecting beach days will struggle – the water is cold and the beaches are often windswept. It’s not a swimming holiday.

Is it worth it generally? Yes, honestly, if your expectations are recalibrated. You’re visiting a beautiful place in its resting state, not its performing state.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with a covered terrace or a proper lounge area. You will spend some evenings inside, and you’ll want somewhere comfortable to land.
