Visiting Granada in July

# Granada in July: Brace Yourself

Okay, real talk. Granada in July is **hot**. Not pleasantly warm, not “bring a light cardigan” hot. We’re talking regularly pushing 38-40°C, with the sun feeling genuinely aggressive by 11am. The Andalusian interior doesn’t mess around in summer, and Granada sits in a basin that traps heat beautifully. Rainfall is virtually nonexistent – you’ll probably see clear blue skies every single day, which sounds lovely until you’re standing in a queue outside the Alhambra feeling your soul leave your body.

And about that queue. July is absolutely peak season. The Alhambra sells out days, sometimes weeks in advance – if you haven’t booked before you arrive, you’re probably not getting in. The streets of the Albaicín are genuinely rammed by mid-morning, and every rooftop bar with a view of the Alhambra will have a wait. The city hasn’t emptied out like some Spanish cities do in August, so you’re competing with both tourists and locals who haven’t fled yet.

That said, everything is open. Every tapas bar, every flamenco show, every viewpoint kiosk – the city is fully operational and buzzing with energy that goes well into the early hours. Granada’s famous free tapas culture is alive and working in your favour, and the nightlife is genuinely excellent if staying up until 2am eating at outdoor tables is your thing.

**Is it worth it?** For night owls, architecture obsessives, and people who genuinely thrive in heat – yes, absolutely. Granada is extraordinary and July doesn’t change that. For families with young children, anyone heat-sensitive, or people who like wandering aimlessly without planning – it’s genuinely punishing and you might just resent it.

**One practical tip:** Book the Alhambra before you book your flights. Not the week before. Before you confirm travel. The early morning slot (opening time) makes a real difference to both temperature and crowds – it’s almost a different experience to the afternoon visit.

Go in October if you can. But if July it is, go prepared.
