# Albufeira in January: The Honest Version
Look, January in Albufeira is a completely different animal to the place you’ve seen on Instagram. And depending on what you want, that’s either quietly brilliant or a bit of a letdown.
The weather sits around 8 or 9 degrees, which feels colder than it sounds because the Atlantic wind has opinions. You’ll get roughly 60mm of rain across the month, usually arriving in moody bursts rather than constant drizzle. There are genuinely lovely days in between – crisp, sunny, the light doing that golden thing on the cliffs – but pack layers and accept that at least a few days will be grey and damp.
The crowds are essentially nonexistent. The Old Town, which becomes a sweaty human traffic jam in summer, is just… peaceful. You can actually look at the architecture. Locals reclaim their town entirely, and the atmosphere shifts from party resort to something far more authentically Portuguese. If you’ve only ever seen the Algarve in peak season, January feels like discovering a different place.
The honest catch is that plenty of businesses genuinely close. Some restaurants, beach bars, and tourist shops shut completely for winter. The main strip around the tourist areas can feel a bit hollow and sad with the shutters down. You’ll need to do a bit more legwork to find good food, though the places that *are* open are almost always worth it – actual locals eating there rather than confused tourists clutching menus with photos.
**Is it worth going?** For walkers, people who want solitude, photographers, or anyone on a tight budget, absolutely yes – prices drop significantly. For someone expecting beach clubs and nightlife, hard no.
**One practical tip:** Don’t base yourself in the Strip area. Stay in the Old Town or slightly outside it. In summer it barely matters because everything’s open everywhere. In January, the Strip with half its businesses closed feels genuinely bleak, whereas the Old Town has enough working restaurants and bars to keep you perfectly happy.
