# Albufeira in May: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough

If someone asked me when to visit Albufeira and actually enjoy it, May would be near the top of my list. Not because it’s perfect, but because the balance tilts heavily in your favour compared to almost any other month.

The weather sits around 24°C, which sounds modest but genuinely feels wonderful. You’re warm in a t-shirt, the sea is cool but swimmable if you’re not precious about it, and crucially, you’re not melting. August hits 30°C plus with brutal humidity and zero shade relief. May lets you actually walk around, explore the old town’s narrow streets, and sit on a terrace without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. The 20mm of rain across the month sounds alarming but translates to maybe three or four grey afternoons rather than a washout week. Pack one light layer.

Crowds are manageable in a way that feels almost shocking if you’ve visited July or August. The main strip and Old Town beach get busy on weekends, but you can still find space on the sand without treating it like a military operation. Restaurants take reservations rather than turning you away at the door. You can browse the market without being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers.

Everything is open. That’s worth emphasising because April catches some places still stretching their legs after winter. By May, boat trips, water parks, restaurants, beach bars — all running properly. You get the full experience without the full chaos.

Who suits May best? Couples, anyone who values atmosphere over party energy, people combining beach time with actually seeing the Algarve properly. Families work well too. It’s less ideal if your entire goal is the raucous nightlife scene, which genuinely peaks in summer with the accompanying crowds.

**One practical tip:** book accommodation mid-week if your schedule allows. Weekend prices spike noticeably in May as Portuguese visitors come down from Lisbon for short breaks. A Tuesday check-in versus Friday can save you real money for identical rooms.

Go in May. You’ll wonder why you ever went in August.
