# Tavira in March: Honest Thoughts

March in Tavira is genuinely lovely, but you need to go in with realistic expectations rather than visions of beach weather.

At 15.6°C you’re looking at pleasant walking temperatures, the kind where a light jacket feels right in the morning and you might shed it by afternoon. It’s not swimming weather for most people, though a few optimistic Portuguese locals will prove you wrong. The 45mm of rainfall means you’ll almost certainly catch at least one grey, drizzly day during a week’s stay, possibly more. These aren’t tropical downpours though – typically overcast mornings that often clear by afternoon, leaving everything smelling clean and the light looking genuinely beautiful on those terracotta rooftops.

The crowds are minimal, which is honestly one of the best reasons to visit then. The tourists who descend on the Algarve in summer haven’t arrived yet, so you can wander the Roman bridge, explore the island beach and sit in the main square without feeling like you’re in a queue. Tavira is a small town and in peak season it can feel overwhelmed. In March it feels like itself again.

Most restaurants are open, the local cafes are definitely open, and the covered market is operating normally. Some beach bars and seasonal outfits on Tavira Island may still be shuttered, but you won’t struggle to eat or find things to do. The town’s churches, castle ruins and general architecture are available year-round and frankly deserve more attention than they get from summer visitors rushing toward the nearest sunlounger.

It’s genuinely worth visiting in March if you’re a couple, a solo traveller, or anyone who prioritises atmosphere, walking, food and affordability over beach time. Families with young children expecting a beach holiday might find it frustrating.

**One practical tip:** book accommodation with good heating. Evenings drop noticeably and older properties in the historic centre can be cold and damp. Check reviews specifically mentioning heating before you commit, because a cold rental will colour your entire trip regardless of how good the pastéis de nata are.
