# Faro in April: What It’s Actually Like

April is genuinely one of the better times to visit Faro, though probably not for the reasons the travel sites will tell you.

The weather sits at that pleasant 19.9°C average, which sounds perfect until you factor in that it swings quite a bit. Mornings can feel genuinely cool, almost jacket-cold, and then by early afternoon you’re peeling off layers. The 30mm of rain is spread across maybe five or six days, so you’re not looking at constant drizzle – more like the occasional afternoon where the sky just opens up briefly and then clears. Pack a light rain jacket and forget about it the rest of the time.

What April actually feels like is a town exhaling. The summer crowds haven’t arrived yet, so you can walk through the old town, poke around the cathedral, and sit in a café without feeling like you’re being herded. The Ria Formosa nature reserve – honestly the main reason most people should visit Faro rather than treating it as a stopover to beach resorts – is excellent this time of year. Migratory birds are moving through, the light is soft, and boat trip operators are running but not slammed.

Most things are open. Some beach-facing businesses are still in weekend-only mode or running reduced hours, but the town itself functions normally. Restaurants are good and bookable without planning your life around it.

Is it worth visiting in April? Yes, particularly if you’re someone who likes having space to think, enjoys nature, and doesn’t need guaranteed beach weather. It’s ideal for older travellers, birdwatchers, people who find August in the Algarve genuinely exhausting, or anyone doing a broader Portugal trip who wants the south without the chaos.

If you’re hoping for reliable swimming-temperature beach days, you’re a month or two early.

**One practical tip:** The old town is compact and very walkable, but almost nobody visits the rooftop of the cathedral. Pay the small entry fee. The views over the lagoon are quietly spectacular and there’s rarely a queue in April.
