The weather is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. You’ll likely get cool, mild days sitting anywhere between 12 and 18 degrees, occasionally warmer if you’re lucky. But January can also throw grey skies, sharp winds off the sea, and proper rainy spells at you without much warning. Pack layers and don’t build your trip around sunbathing, because you’ll set yourself up for disappointment.

Here’s the thing though – the town itself is kind of lovely in January. Torrevieja has a sizeable permanent population, including a huge expat community, so it never fully shuts down the way smaller resorts do. The promenade is walkable and genuinely pleasant on a dry day. The famous salt lakes look dramatic in winter light, and you’ll practically have them to yourself. Restaurants serving actual food to actual locals are open, which means you eat better and cheaper than you would in August.

Crowds are minimal to the point of feeling slightly strange if you’ve only ever seen the place in summer. The beaches are empty. Parking is free and plentiful. Nobody is hassling you with menus outside restaurants. It’s peaceful in a way that’s either relaxing or a bit sad depending on your personality.

Some seasonal bars and beach chiringuitos will be closed, and you’ll notice the main shopping streets are quieter. But the weekly markets still run, the salt lake walking paths are accessible, and there are enough cafes and restaurants open to keep you fed and happy.

Worth visiting in January? Honestly, yes – but for the right person. If you want winter sun and a tan, go to the Canary Islands instead. If you want cheap flights, affordable accommodation, quiet walks, decent restaurants, and a genuinely off-season feel without the place being completely dead, Torrevieja in January works surprisingly well.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with decent heating. Sea-facing apartments get cold at night, and you’ll thank yourself.
