# Cinque Terre in April: The Honest Version

April in Cinque Terre is genuinely lovely, but it’s not the Instagram fantasy you’ve been sold, and you should know what you’re actually signing up for.

The weather sits around 17°C, which sounds perfect until you factor in the rain. Nearly 100mm across the month means you will almost certainly hit a wet day or two, possibly more. The famous coastal trails get slippery, some sections close after heavy rainfall for safety reasons, and a soggy afternoon in Riomaggiore feels considerably smaller than it does in sunshine. That said, the villages look genuinely beautiful in soft grey light, the terraced hillsides are shockingly green, and the wildflowers are doing something extraordinary that they absolutely won’t be doing in August.

Crowds are building but manageable. Easter weekend is the obvious exception – treat that like summer and book accordingly or avoid it entirely. Outside of that holiday spike, you’ll share the main paths with a reasonable number of people rather than an actual queue. Restaurants that were shuttered all winter are reopening, though some smaller places are still finding their rhythm and might be closed on random weekdays. Don’t assume everywhere is fully operational.

The Via dell’Amore, the famous easy coastal walk, has been closed for repairs for years, so don’t build your entire trip around it. Check current trail conditions before you go, genuinely, because they change.

Is it worth it? For photographers, hikers who don’t mind mud, and anyone with strong feelings about not being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, April is genuinely one of the better months. For people whose happiness depends on beach weather and everything being reliably open, wait until June.

**One practical tip:** Book your accommodations earlier than feels necessary. The villages are physically tiny. There aren’t that many beds, and the good options at sensible prices go fast even in shoulder season. Leaving it until two weeks out means expensive or inconveniently located, full stop.

Come with waterproofs, low expectations, and genuine curiosity. You’ll probably love it.
