Visiting Cairo in May
# Cairo in May: What You’re Actually Getting Into
Let’s be straight with you: May in Cairo is hot. Not “oh how exotic” hot — genuinely, relentlessly, sapping-your-will-to-walk hot. Temperatures regularly push into the low 40s Celsius (that’s high 100s Fahrenheit), and the city has essentially no shade. The Pyramids sit on an open plateau that functions like a frying pan. You will sweat through everything you own by 10am.
Rainfall is basically irrelevant. Cairo receives almost none year-round, so you can stop worrying about that entirely. What you might encounter instead is khamaseen — dusty, gritty sandstorms that occasionally blow through in spring, turning the sky an eerie orange and making everything taste like the Sahara. They don’t last long, but they’re genuinely unpleasant and nobody tells you about them in the brochures.
The crowds are a mixed picture. European and American tourist numbers drop compared to the milder winter months, which means the Egyptian Museum and major sites are noticeably less chaotic. However, Gulf tourists pick up significantly in May, so don’t expect empty pyramids. Giza will still have vendors, horses, and someone trying to put a camel blanket on you for a photo.
Everything is open. Museums, mosques, Khan el-Khalili bazaar, sound-and-light shows — May doesn’t bring any closures worth worrying about.
**Is it worth it?** For heat-tolerant people on a budget, honestly yes. Flights and hotels are cheaper than peak season, and the slightly thinner Western tourist crowds make some experiences genuinely better. For families with young children or anyone who struggles in heat, this is not your month. Go in October or February and thank yourself later.
**One practical tip:** Start moving by 6am. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, even wandering Coptic Cairo — do it all before noon, then retreat somewhere air-conditioned for three hours. Most travelers who “hate Cairo in May” made the mistake of being outside at 2pm. The city rewards early risers and punishes everyone else without mercy.
