# Genoa in April: What It’s Actually Like
Genoa in April is genuinely pleasant, but let’s be honest about what you’re signing up for.
The 15.7°C average sounds lovely on paper, and it largely is. You’ll have days where you’re wandering the *caruggi* – those impossibly narrow medieval alleyways – in just a light jacket, genuinely happy with your life choices. Then you’ll have days where the sky turns that particular shade of grey that the Ligurian coast does so well, and the 30mm of monthly rainfall arrives mostly sideways. It’s not constant drizzle; it tends to come in proper bursts. Pack a compact umbrella and don’t let anyone talk you out of it.
The city itself feels pretty real in April. This is not a heavily touristed destination at the best of times – Genoa gets overlooked by people rushing between Florence and the French Riviera, which is frankly their loss and your gain. In April you’ll encounter very few other visitors at the Palazzo Ducale, the aquarium (one of Europe’s best, genuinely), or along the Porto Antico waterfront. Restaurants are full of locals. Nobody is performing for tourists because there aren’t enough tourists to bother performing for.
Everything is open. Shoulder season crowds mean museum entry is straightforward, no booking weeks in advance, no queuing in the heat. The aquarium does get busy on weekends because Italian families visit, but that’s fine – it’s a zoo-level attraction and handles it well.
**Is it worth it?** Absolutely, but for a specific kind of traveller. If you like cities with genuine personality, good food that isn’t inflated for visitors, and enough architectural drama to keep you occupied for three or four days without fighting crowds, Genoa in April is quietly excellent. If you need sunshine guaranteed and a beach holiday vibe, you’re in the wrong place entirely.
**One practical tip:** The hills behind the city are accessible by historic funiculars and elevators, and April’s clear-ish days deliver views that will genuinely stop you mid-sentence. Go up in the morning before any cloud builds.
