March in Kyrenia sits in that awkward middle ground where the Mediterranean hasn’t quite committed to being warm yet. Days can genuinely surprise you — bright sunshine, temperatures nudging 18-19°C, the castle glowing gold against a blue harbour — but you’re equally likely to get grey skies, a persistent cold wind off the mountains, and rain that arrives without much warning. Pack layers you actually mean to use, not just as backup.

The crowds are thin, which is either a selling point or a warning depending on what you want. The harbour area — usually buzzing with tourists photographing the same boats — feels almost like a local neighbourhood in March. You can linger over coffee without feeling like you’re blocking someone’s Instagram shot. Kyrenia Castle is open and genuinely worth the entrance fee in this light and quiet. The Shipwreck Museum inside deserves more attention than it gets in summer when people rush through.

The honest drawback is that some restaurants and smaller guesthouses run reduced hours or are simply closed. The harbour has enough open to eat well, but if you’re imagining a full spread of choice, temper that slightly. You’ll find your spots quickly enough.

For hiking, March is arguably better than summer — the Five Finger Mountains behind the town are green, trails aren’t punishing, and the views down to the coast reward the effort without requiring you to start at sunrise to avoid heat stroke. If that appeals to you, this is a genuinely good month to come.

Worth it? Yes, for independent travellers who prefer atmosphere over guaranteed sunshine, photographers, hikers, and anyone who gets irritated by crowds. Not ideal if you’re travelling with young children banking on beach days — the sea is cold and unpredictable, and disappointment becomes a distinct possibility.

**One practical tip:** The old town streets above the harbour are the real Kyrenia, and March is when you actually get to walk them slowly. Start there before you do anything else.
