# Syros in December: The Real Picture
Let’s be honest with you. Syros in December is not the postcard version. The Aegean is grey and choppy, Ermoupoli’s neoclassical streets are often wet, and that 9.8°C average feels noticeably colder when the wind comes off the water, which it frequently does. Pack layers you actually mean it about.
The 65mm of rainfall means you’ll probably hit at least a few genuinely rainy days, not just light drizzle. Some afternoons are perfectly fine, even crisp and sunny in a way that makes the marble architecture look almost theatrical. But you can’t count on that.
Here’s what December actually gives you though. The crowds are essentially gone. Ermoupoli, which is genuinely one of the most underrated towns in Greece, becomes yours in a way that’s impossible in summer. You can wander Vaporia, the aristocratic neighbourhood clinging to the hillside, without another tourist in sight. The locals are just living their lives. Ano Syros, the Catholic hilltop settlement, is quiet and slightly otherworldly in the low winter light.
Most tavernas in Ermoupoli stay open year-round because this is a real working town with a proper population, not a seasonal resort. You’ll eat well without booking anything. The Apollon Theatre, one of the oldest opera houses in Greece, sometimes has winter programming worth checking before you go.
What’s closed is most of the beach infrastructure, day trip boats, and anything targeting summer tourism. Nobody is pretending it’s beach weather and nor should you.
Is it worth it? For a certain kind of traveller, absolutely. If you want to actually feel what a Greek island town is like when it belongs to itself, if you find empty streets more interesting than packed ones, if you like good food and architecture and don’t need sunshine guaranteed, Syros in December is quietly excellent.
**Practical tip:** Bring waterproof shoes, not just a jacket. The cobblestones in Ermoupoli get slippery when wet and your trainers will be soaked through within an hour.
