Where to Stay in Menton

Menton sits at the far eastern tip of the French Riviera, pressed against the Italian border, and it genuinely feels like a town that tourism forgot in the best possible way. Choosing where to sleep here is fairly straightforward because the town is compact, but a few distinctions are worth knowing before you book.

The old town, known as the Vieille Ville, is the most atmospheric place to base yourself. Staying within walking distance of the seafront promenade and the baroque Saint-Michel basilica means you can reach everything without a car. Mid-range hotels in this zone typically run between 100 and 180 euros per night depending on the season, and you get genuinely charming surroundings rather than paying a premium purely for a name. The Garavan area, slightly east toward the Italian border, is quieter still, residential and leafy, with good access to the famous gardens like the Jardin Serre de la Madone. It suits people who want calm over convenience.

The area immediately around the train station is functional but lacks character. It works if you are using Menton as a base for day trips to Monaco or Ventimiglia, but do not expect charm. Budget travelers doing it right should look at small family-run hotels or well-reviewed guesthouses in the old town rather than defaulting to the station neighborhood, where the price savings rarely justify the trade-off in atmosphere. Splurgers will find a handful of beautifully renovated properties near the beachfront worth the step up.

The single booking mistake people consistently make is treating Menton like a summer-only destination and scrambling to book in July or August when crowds and prices both climb. Shoulder season, meaning April, May, or October, gives you the same golden light, the same lemon-scented streets, and a much more relaxed pace. Hotels are easier to negotiate with directly during these months, and you will often get a better room for the same budget tier simply by calling ahead rather than relying entirely on third-party platforms, which frequently show limited inventory during quieter periods.
