# Palermo in October: The Honest Version

October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Palermo, though not for the reasons travel blogs usually claim.

The heat has finally broken. At 23°C you can actually walk around the Ballarò market at noon without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked inside your own clothes. Summer in Palermo is brutal and relentless, so October feels like the city exhaling. Locals emerge properly again. You’ll see people actually sitting outside in the evening rather than hiding from the heat, which makes the street life feel more authentic and less performative.

The rain figure of nearly 100mm sounds alarming but it doesn’t mean constant drizzle. Palermo in October tends to get proper Mediterranean downpours, sometimes dramatic and short-lived, sometimes a genuinely grey day that catches you off guard. Pack a compact rain jacket and stop worrying about it. The light after rain here is honestly beautiful.

Crowds are noticeably thinner than summer but Palermo was never Rome-level overwhelming anyway. You’ll share the Palazzo dei Normanni and the Cappella Palatina with tour groups, but you’re not fighting through them. Restaurants are still fully operational, most street food stalls are running, and nobody is shutting up shop for the season. This isn’t a place that hibernates dramatically.

Is it worth it? For people who want to actually eat and walk and exist comfortably in a city, yes, genuinely. Palermo rewards slow exploration. The markets, the crumbling baroque architecture, the food scene around the Vucciria in the evenings. October suits that pace. Families with kids will find it manageable. Solo travellers and couples will find it comfortable without being sanitised.

It’s less ideal if you’re coming purely for beach time. The sea is still swimmable at around 22°C but the beach atmosphere has evaporated.

**Practical tip:** The Cappella Palatina has genuinely limited entry numbers and timed slots matter more than people expect. Book online a day or two ahead rather than assuming you’ll walk in, even in October.
