# Capri in January: Beautiful, Bleak, and Basically Yours
Let’s be straight with you. Capri in January is a completely different island from the one plastered across everyone’s Instagram. And depending on what you’re after, that’s either a problem or the whole point.
The weather sits around 7-8°C, which sounds manageable until the wind comes off the water. That 60mm of rain doesn’t fall politely either – it tends to arrive dramatically, turning the narrow lanes into small rivers and wrapping the island in a grey mist that makes the cliffs disappear entirely. You’ll have days of surprising, crisp winter sunshine where the sea looks impossibly blue. You’ll also have days where you’re genuinely questioning your life choices under a café awning, waiting for a downpour to pass.
Crowds are essentially nonexistent. The piazzetta, normally an overpriced circus of sunglasses and selfie sticks, becomes almost eerily quiet. You can walk the path to the Arco Naturale without a single person ahead of you. That alone is worth something.
What’s actually open is the honest question. Many restaurants, hotels, and shops close completely from November through March. The Blue Grotto operates weather and tide dependent year-round but cancellations are frequent in winter swells. Villa San Michele in Anacapri stays open. The Gardens of Augustus are accessible. You’re not getting the full menu of experiences – you’re getting the island’s bones, which are genuinely beautiful.
**Is it worth visiting?** For photographers, slow travellers, and people who find crowds genuinely exhausting, yes, absolutely. For anyone whose holiday depends on beach days, aperitivo culture, and a buzzing social atmosphere, honest answer is no. Save it for May.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation carefully and confirm it’s actually operational in January before you arrive. Several places list themselves as open but respond to enquiries with a polite notice that they’re closed until April. Email directly, get confirmation in writing, and have a backup option. The last thing you want is arriving by ferry to discover your hotel is shuttered.
