Visiting Chios in March
# Chios in March: Still Very Much the Off-Season
Look, March in Chios is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. The Aegean in early spring does whatever it wants. You might get crisp, bright days that feel almost Mediterranean-promising, with temperatures hovering around 13-16°C. You might also get grey skies, steady rain, and a wind that cuts right through you. Often you’ll get both in the same week. Pack accordingly, meaning layers and something waterproof, not just a light jacket you’re optimistically calling sufficient.
What you’ll find on the ground is a place that hasn’t really woken up yet. The mastic villages in the south – Pyrgi, Mesta, Olympi – are still there and still extraordinary, those medieval fortified settlements looking exactly as strange and wonderful as they do in photos, but you’ll be wandering them almost alone. That’s either deeply appealing or slightly eerie depending on your personality. Many tavernas open limited hours or specific days, and a handful won’t have bothered opening at all yet. Don’t arrive with a list of must-visit restaurants without checking ahead.
The beaches are pointless in March unless you’re the kind of person who finds empty, cold coastline romantically melancholy. Which is a valid thing to be.
What IS worth your time: the Archaeological Museum, the Masticulture museum if you want to understand what makes this island genuinely unique, the Byzantine monastery at Nea Moni (a UNESCO site that most summer visitors overlook entirely), and just driving the interior, which is quietly beautiful and completely yours.
Crowds are essentially nonexistent. This is the whole point for certain travellers.
Is it worth it? If you want a relaxed, slightly rough-around-the-edges introduction to a place that never gets touristy anyway, yes. If you need warmth, guaranteed sunshine, or reliable evening dining options, wait until May.
**Practical tip:** Rent a car immediately. Bus schedules in March are skeletal, and Chios without mobility is a very small island indeed.
