Visiting Aegina in February
# Aegina in February: The Island With Its Guard Down
Aegina in February is about as far from the summer postcard version as you can get, and honestly, that’s either going to appeal to you or it isn’t.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get crisp, bright days where the light on the Saronic Gulf looks almost theatrical and you’re comfortable in a jacket. You might get three consecutive days of grey skies, cold wind off the water, and rain that makes outdoor sightseeing genuinely miserable. There’s no way to promise you sunshine, and anyone who does is selling something. Pack layers, bring a waterproof, and mentally prepare for both scenarios.
What you will find is an island that actually belongs to its residents. The ferry from Piraeus still runs regularly, and the people on it will mostly be locals heading home with shopping bags rather than tourists with rolling luggage. The main town feels lived-in rather than performed. Tavernas are open but quieter, and you’re likely to get actual attention from staff rather than being shuffled through a tourist menu at speed. The pistachio shops are absolutely still operating — Aegina pistachios are a year-round local industry, not a seasonal prop.
The Temple of Aphaia is open and genuinely wonderful without crowds. Standing up there on a February afternoon with almost nobody else around, looking out toward Athens, is a different experience entirely from the summer version. Worth the trip up regardless of the weather.
What’s closed or reduced: expect some waterfront restaurants to be shuttered, fewer boat trip options, and a general sense that the island is conserving energy. That’s not a complaint, it’s just accurate.
Is it worth going? If you like quiet, off-season travel, walking without sweating, and getting a real sense of a Greek island community rather than its hospitality infrastructure, yes. If you need guaranteed warmth, beach time, or lively nightlife, February is genuinely not your month.
**Practical tip:** Check the ferry schedule before you go. Winter timetables run less frequently, and missing the last boat back to Piraeus makes for an unplanned overnight.
