# Paxos in September: Still Summer, Just About

September in Paxos sits in that interesting grey zone where summer hasn’t quite packed its bags but you can sense it thinking about it. The honest answer on weather is that early September feels almost identical to August – hot, dry, relentlessly blue skied, typically mid to high twenties. By the final week, things can shift. You might get your first proper cloudy day, occasionally a brief sharp shower that feels almost theatrical after months of nothing. Rainfall is genuinely unpredictable at this point, so pack one light layer you won’t resent carrying.

What it actually feels like in September is this: August Paxos is genuinely heaving. The island has only around 2,500 residents and the infrastructure reflects that. Come September, particularly after the first week, something loosens. The boats in Gaios harbour thin out. You can get a table at Erimitis without planning it three days in advance. The little beach at Mongonissi stops feeling like a competitive sport.

Most things remain open through September – tavernas, boat hire, water taxis to Antipaxos. Antipaxos itself, with those ridiculous turquoise waters, is absolutely still worth the trip and noticeably calmer than peak season. Some smaller shops and the odd beach bar start closing in the final days, but nothing dramatic.

Is it worth visiting then? For certain people, absolutely yes. If you genuinely struggled with August crowds on previous Greek islands, September here is a revelation – same light, same water, same food, but you can actually think. It suits couples, people who prioritise swimming over nightlife, and anyone who finds peak season Greek islands slightly exhausting while still wanting proper heat and sun.

If you’re travelling with young children who need structured entertainment or you want a buzzing social scene, the energy is noticeably quieter and some of that spontaneous holiday atmosphere has faded.

**One practical tip:** Hire a small boat for a day early in your trip rather than leaving it late. Availability stays reasonable in September but the best operators still book up, and getting yourself independently around the coastline is genuinely the point of Paxos.
