Visiting Paxos in October
Visiting Paxos in October
# Paxos in October: The Honest Version
Here’s the thing about October on Paxos – you’re rolling the dice a little, and you should know that going in.
The island sits in the Ionian, which means it gets its rain earlier than the Aegean islands. October can be genuinely lovely, with warm days, that thick golden light, and the olive harvest beginning to fill the air with something that smells almost edible. It can also turn grey and wet with surprising commitment, particularly in the second half of the month. The sea temperature is still reasonable – probably mid-20s Celsius – but whether you’ll actually want to swim depends entirely on which week you land.
What you’ll find is a place that’s finally exhaled. Paxos in August is beautiful but genuinely rammed for something so small. By October, those impossibly tight lanes in Gaios aren’t a contact sport anymore. You can actually sit outside a taverna and hear the person across from you. The boats in the harbour look decorative rather than traffic.
The trade-off is real though. Some beach bars and boat hire places start shutting mid-month, and by late October your options for eating out thin noticeably, especially on quieter evenings. You won’t be stuck – Gaios has year-round bones – but spontaneity gets harder.
It’s genuinely worth it for walkers, people who want to rent a small boat and poke around sea caves without queuing, couples who’d rather have a terrace to themselves, and anyone who finds August tourism psychologically exhausting. It’s probably not the move if sunshine and guaranteed swimming are non-negotiable, or if you want Paxos’s social buzz rather than its actual character.
Anti-Paxos day trips still run early October but check with locals before assuming.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation anyway. Paxos is tiny and the good small places fill up even in shoulder season, partly because the island has genuinely limited beds. Don’t assume October means walk-in availability – it doesn’t.
Go with flexibility in your itinerary and realistic expectations about weather, and October Paxos can be quietly excellent.
