Visiting Madeira in April
# Madeira in April: What It’s Actually Like
Here’s the honest version: April in Madeira is genuinely lovely, but it’s not the guaranteed sunshine holiday some people expect when they hear “Atlantic island.”
The weather is mild – typically sitting around 19-22°C – but it’s changeable in a way that catches people off guard. Madeira has its own micro-climate situation where the north side of the island can be completely socked in with cloud while the south coast is perfectly pleasant. Rain is a real possibility, not a rare inconvenience. You might get four gorgeous days followed by two grey drizzly ones. Pack accordingly and don’t build an itinerary that requires wall-to-wall sun.
**What works in your favour**
April is shoulder season trending toward busy, especially around Easter. If Easter falls in April that particular year, expect noticeably more visitors – hotels fill up, the popular levada walks feel less peaceful, and Funchal gets crowded. Outside of that window, crowds are manageable and the island doesn’t feel overwhelmed. Everything is open – restaurants, boat trips, cable cars, markets. The famous Flower Festival sometimes falls in late April or early May, and if it overlaps with your trip, the decorations and atmosphere around Funchal are genuinely worth seeing.
The landscape in April is spectacular. Rainfall through winter means the mountains are intensely green, waterfalls are running properly, and the levadas are at their most dramatic. If you’re hiking, this is a genuinely excellent time.
**Who should go**
Hikers and walkers will love it. Nature people, wine drinkers, anyone who finds beach holidays slightly tedious – Madeira rewards you properly. If your holiday depends entirely on lying by a pool in reliable heat, you’re taking a gamble.
**One practical tip**
Book your levada walks with a guide rather than going solo if you’re unfamiliar with the island. In April, mountain paths can be slippery and visibility changes fast. It’s genuinely safer, and a good guide makes the whole experience considerably richer.
Worth it? For the right person, absolutely yes.
