# Vieste in May: Pretty Much the Sweet Spot

Honestly, if someone asked me when to visit Vieste, May would be near the top of my list, and here’s why.

The weather is genuinely lovely without being punishing. Temperatures sit somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius most days, warm enough to sit outside with a glass of wine and feel smug about it, but not the suffocating heat that rolls in later in summer. You might get some rain, particularly in early May – the Gargano peninsula has its own slightly unpredictable microclimate, so pack a light jacket and don’t assume every day will be postcard perfect. A couple of overcast days in a week is fairly normal. It won’t ruin your trip.

The crowds situation is where May really earns its reputation. Italian school holidays haven’t started, the German and French summer invasion hasn’t arrived yet, and you can actually walk through Vieste’s old town – the *vieste vecchia* – without shuffling along behind someone’s rolling suitcase. The narrow white lanes feel like they’re supposed to feel. You can get a table at a good restaurant without planning three days ahead.

Most things are open by May. Boat trips to the sea caves, excursions to the Tremiti Islands, kayak rentals along the coast – the seasonal operators are up and running. The beaches aren’t packed, which means you can actually appreciate how absurdly beautiful they are rather than hunting for a patch of sand. Pizzomunno, the famous white monolith, looks genuinely dramatic when you’re not photographing it over a sea of beach umbrellas.

Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, and anyone who actually wants to *experience* a place rather than survive it, absolutely yes. Families with young kids might find the water still a bit cool for prolonged swimming, so manage expectations there.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation early anyway. May is no longer a secret, and Vieste is small. The good places fill up faster than you’d expect for what’s technically shoulder season.
