Visiting Procida in December
# Procida in December: The Island With Its Guard Down
Most people discover Procida through those famous photos — the candy-coloured houses stacked above the harbour, fishing boats bobbing in absurd prettiness. December gives you all of that, just wrapped in a grey cardigan.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get crisp, clear days with sharp Mediterranean light that makes the pastel facades look almost theatrical. You might get four days of sideways rain and wind that rattles every shutter on the island. Realistically, expect a mix of both, temperatures sitting somewhere around 12-15°C, and the kind of damp chill that seeps into stone buildings that weren’t designed with winter warmth in mind.
What December does give you is the island almost entirely to yourself. Procida is small — you can walk across it in under an hour — and in summer it feels like the whole of Naples arrives by ferry for the weekend. In December, the streets belong to actual residents. You’ll hear dialect, see the same faces at the same bar every morning, feel like you’ve accidentally moved there rather than visited.
The trade-off is real though. Plenty of restaurants close, some until Easter. The waterfront places thin out considerably. You’ll find enough open to eat well — this is still Italy, near Naples, so the food baseline is high — but you won’t have choices. Whatever’s open is what you’re having, and honestly that’s usually fine.
The island’s bones are always visible. The Marina Corricella, the terracotta alleyways, the views across to Ischia and the mainland — none of that requires sunshine or a restaurant being open.
Worth it for whom? Photographers, writers, anyone who genuinely likes quiet over atmosphere, couples who don’t need entertainment laid on. Not worth it for families with young children, anyone who struggles with unpredictable weather emotionally, or people who need a buzzing social scene.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in advance even in December. Very little is open, so the few good guesthouses fill quickly with the people who specifically sought this out.
