Visiting Losinj in March

# Losinj in March: Honest Thoughts

March on Losinj is genuinely a gamble, and you should know that going in.

The weather is unpredictable in a way that goes beyond the usual “pack layers” advice. You might get crisp, brilliantly sunny days where the Adriatic looks almost Caribbean and you’re questioning why everyone waits for summer. You might equally get grey, blustery stretches where the bura wind tears in off the sea and rain sits over the island for days. Sometimes both happen in the same week. There’s no reliable way to promise you sunshine, and anyone who does is selling you something.

What you can rely on is the quiet. Mali Losinj in March is genuinely, deeply quiet. The promenade isn’t deserted — there are usually some retirees, a handful of Croatians doing their own off-season escape, maybe a few hardy German or Austrian visitors who’ve discovered the island’s pine-forest air trails. But the summer crowds that pack every cafe and clog every viewpoint simply don’t exist. If your idea of a good trip involves actually feeling like you’re somewhere rather than queuing to experience somewhere, March has real appeal.

The tradeoff is practical. A fair number of restaurants and accommodation options are closed or running reduced hours. The island isn’t completely shuttered — some hotels operate year-round, the pharmacy is open, you can eat — but you won’t have full choice. Check ahead rather than assuming your favourite spot from a summer trip will be waiting for you.

The dolphin watching boats are largely out of service, and watersports are a non-starter. What’s genuinely lovely is walking. The marked trails through the aromatic pine forests are beautiful in cool weather, often misty in an atmospheric rather than miserable way.

Worth it? For certain people, absolutely yes. Solo travellers, couples wanting genuine downtime, writers, anyone with sensory overload who needs the volume turned down — March Losinj can feel like a gift.

**Practical tip:** Book a place with a kitchen or kitchenette. When half the restaurants are closed and the weather turns, you’ll be very glad you did.
