# Visiting Rab in April: What to Actually Expect
April on Rab is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. You might land to brilliant sunshine and 16°C, spend four days eating grilled fish on a harbour terrace feeling smug about your timing. You might also arrive to grey skies, persistent rain, and a wind off the Velebit mountains that makes the waterfront feel genuinely bleak. Both versions of April exist here, sometimes within the same week.
The sea is too cold for swimming for almost everyone – water temperatures hover around 13-14°C, so unless you’re the type who swims in Scottish lochs for fun, don’t build your trip around it.
What you do get is the island largely to yourself. Rab Town in peak summer is genuinely heaving – narrow medieval streets clogged with cruise day-trippers, restaurants packed, prices elevated. In April, you can walk those four bell towers and the old town lanes in actual peace, which is honestly how they deserve to be experienced. The light in the stone streets on a clear April morning is quietly beautiful.
The practical reality of what’s open is mixed. The old town has enough bars and restaurants operating to eat and drink well, but don’t expect full choice. Beach bars on Lopar are mostly shuttered. Some apartment rentals and smaller hotels haven’t opened yet. The famous sandy beaches at Lopar are deserted, which is either appealing or pointless depending on your priorities.
Is it worth going? For certain people, absolutely yes. If you like hiking, the island’s interior and coastal paths are excellent and genuinely comfortable walking temperatures. If you want the Croatian island atmosphere without the performance of high season, April delivers it honestly. If your entire holiday vision depends on reliable sun and swimming, wait until June.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the old town rather than the beach resort areas. In April, being central matters because you’ll spend more time in cafes and town than on beaches, and you don’t want to be stranded somewhere that’s half-closed.
