Here’s the thing about Losinj in October – you’re rolling the dice a little, and you should know that going in.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get warm, golden days in the low 20s with that Adriatic light that makes everything look slightly unreal. You might also get grey skies, proper rain, and a Bora wind that comes screaming down from the northeast and makes you question your life choices. Sometimes you get both in the same week. The water temperature is still reasonable early in the month – probably around 18-19°C if you fancy a swim – but by late October that enthusiasm fades fast.

What you do get, unambiguously, is the place largely to yourself. The summer crowds have dissolved. The streets of Mali Losinj feel like a town again rather than a holding pen for sunburned tourists. You can actually look at the pastel-coloured harbourfront without someone’s selfie stick in your eyeline.

The catch is that October is shoulder-season-turning-off-season, and Croatia doesn’t do half measures on this. Some restaurants have closed. Some boat trips have stopped running. The Apoxyomenos Museum – home to the famous bronze statue pulled from the sea – should still be open, and the dolphin research centre typically remains accessible, but always check ahead. Don’t assume anything is operating on summer hours.

So who is this actually for? Hikers, honestly. The island’s trails through aromatic pine forests are genuinely lovely in cooler weather, and you won’t be trudging along in 32-degree heat. It’s also good for people who want to read, eat well, walk, and decompress without the whole performance of peak-season Croatia.

If you want beaches, boats, and guaranteed sunshine, go in June instead.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation directly with smaller guesthouses rather than through platforms. In October, owners are often flexible on price and genuinely happy to have guests. A quick email goes a long way.
