Visiting Roses in March
Visiting Roses in March
# Roses in March: Honestly, It’s a Gamble
March in Roses is one of those months where you genuinely cannot predict what you’re walking into. The Costa Brava can throw anything at you – brilliant sharp sunshine that makes the bay look almost Aegean, or cold grey drizzle that settles in for days and makes the promenade feel faintly melancholy. Locals will shrug and tell you this is normal. They’re not wrong.
The upside of this uncertainty is that the town is essentially yours. Roses in March is operating on something close to skeleton mode. A good chunk of restaurants and hotels are still shuttered, recovering from their winter hibernation, but enough is open to get by comfortably. You’ll find the permanent local spots – the places that serve the fishermen and year-round residents – fully operational and genuinely welcoming. These are often the better meals anyway.
The beach is empty in a way that feels almost cinematic. Walking along the bay with maybe a handful of other people, the Pyrenees still snow-capped in the distance, is genuinely lovely if you can embrace the quietness rather than fight it. Nobody is competing for your sunlounger, because nobody is there.
Who is this month actually for? Hikers, honestly. The Cap de Creus natural park is extraordinary in March – trails aren’t baked dry, the light is beautiful, and you’ll encounter almost nobody. Nature photographers get good conditions. Couples who want somewhere peaceful and don’t need a buzzing social scene will enjoy it. Anyone chasing beach holiday vibes will struggle and probably leave disappointed after two days.
The famous El Bulli location up the road is worth the drive for the scenery alone, even though the restaurant itself became a foundation years ago.
**Practical tip:** Don’t assume opening hours posted online are accurate in March. Restaurants that claim to open Tuesday through Sunday sometimes just open when they feel like it. Call ahead, or build in the flexibility to eat wherever you find a lit sign. Fighting this attitude will only frustrate you.
