Visiting Roses in April

# Roses in April: What It’s Actually Like

April in Roses is genuinely one of those months where you’re rolling the dice a little, and it’s worth being honest about that before you book anything.

The Costa Brava doesn’t really switch into reliable sunshine mode until May, and Roses sits right in that awkward shoulder season where you can absolutely get gorgeous warm days with calm water and light so good it makes you understand why artists come here. You can also get grey skies, a biting tramuntana wind coming off the Pyrenees, and rain that sticks around for three days. Both versions of April happen regularly, and there’s no way to predict which one you’re walking into.

**The town itself** is noticeably quieter than summer, which is either the whole point or a dealbreaker depending on what you want. The seafront isn’t packed, you can actually park, restaurant choices are limited but the places that are open aren’t rushed. The Ciutadella de Roses, the ruined citadel right on the bay, is open and genuinely worth a few hours without summer crowds. The beach is walkable and peaceful, just not really swimmable unless you’re very committed.

**What’s closed** is the honest part of this conversation. A fair chunk of restaurants and a lot of the smaller accommodation options don’t reopen until late April or early May. You won’t feel like the place is shuttered, but you’ll notice the gaps.

**Is it worth it?** For couples, people who want to walk the Cap de Creus peninsula without sharing the trail with everyone in Europe, or anyone who finds August coastal Spain genuinely exhausting, yes, absolutely. For families expecting a beach holiday with reliable swimming and everything firing on all cylinders, probably wait until June.

**One practical tip:** Book somewhere with an indoor common area or a decent covered terrace. If the weather turns on you for a couple of days, having somewhere comfortable to retreat to makes the difference between a disappointing trip and one that feels like a proper slow escape.
