Visiting Roses in July

# Visiting Roses in July

Look, July in Roses is peak Costa Brava summer, and you should know exactly what you’re walking into before you book anything.

The weather is hot. Genuinely hot. We’re talking 28-32°C most days, sometimes pushing higher, with that dry Tramuntana breeze occasionally offering relief but not always showing up when you need it. Rainfall is pretty minimal – July is one of the driest months on the calendar here, so don’t pack much beyond a light layer for the odd evening. The sea temperature is finally comfortable after the cooler spring months, which is genuinely one of the better arguments for coming now.

The crowds, though. This is where honesty matters. July is busy, but August is absolutely rammed, so July has this slightly misleading reputation as the “sensible” summer choice. It isn’t quiet. The Passeig Maritim fills up properly, finding a good spot on the main beach requires either arriving early or accepting you’re sandwiched between families, and restaurant queues at the better places are real. That said, it’s not the complete madness of the second half of August. You can still breathe.

Everything is open. Every bar, restaurant, water sports rental, boat trip, and shop is firing on all cylinders. The Cap de Creus natural park is accessible and the kayaking around those rocky coves is genuinely excellent in summer conditions. The medieval ruins above town are worth a morning visit before the heat becomes oppressive around midday.

Is it worth it? If you want the full buzzing summer coastal experience with warm water, long evenings, cold beer, and everything operational, yes. If you hate heat and crowds even slightly, consider May or September without hesitation – you’ll probably love the place more.

**One practical tip:** Book your accommodation with free cancellation, then set an alarm for 8am on your first morning and walk to Platja de la Pelosa or head toward the quieter coves north toward Empuriabrava. That early hour is when Roses actually shows you why people keep coming back.
