# Taormina in March: Pretty, Damp, and Wonderfully Empty
March in Taormina is genuinely lovely if you go in with realistic expectations. The weather is mild rather than warm — you’re looking at around 14°C, which feels perfectly pleasant when the sun comes out, but distinctly chilly when it doesn’t. And it won’t always come out. March brings meaningful rainfall, over 100mm spread across the month, so you’ll likely have a few properly wet days mixed in with some crisp, bright ones. Pack a proper waterproof jacket, not just a light layer.
Here’s the upside nobody talks about enough: the place is practically yours. Taormina in summer is genuinely overrun — cruise ship crowds, queues for everything, noise. In March you can walk along Corso Umberto, stand at the Greek Theatre and actually absorb how extraordinary it is without someone’s selfie stick in your face. That alone is worth a lot.
Most of the main things are open. The Teatro Greco is accessible, the cable car down to Isola Bella runs, restaurants and cafés along the main drag are operating. You might find some smaller places still shuttered from winter, and a handful of beach bars below won’t have woken up yet, but you won’t be stuck for options. The famous public gardens are beautiful this time of year, genuinely green and blooming.
Is it worth it? For certain people, absolutely yes. If you care about atmosphere over beach weather, if you want to actually photograph the place rather than photograph crowds, if you’re interested in exploring Sicily properly rather than just lying horizontal — March works well. It’s also noticeably cheaper. Couples, solo travellers, anyone doing a broader Sicily road trip, this is your month.
If your idea of a good holiday requires reliable sunshine and warm enough temperatures to sit outside comfortably for hours, you might find it frustrating. Manage expectations accordingly.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the town itself rather than down the hill. When it rains, you really don’t want to depend on the cable car or steep steps to get anywhere.
