Visiting Girona in December
# Girona in December: What It’s Actually Like
Let’s be honest about the weather first: December in Girona is genuinely unpredictable. You might get crisp, cold days with brilliant winter light that makes the coloured houses along the Onyar look almost theatrical. You might also get grey, damp weeks where the narrow streets feel relentlessly bleak and your shoes never fully dry out. Temperatures hover somewhere between 4°C and 13°C, and rainfall is a real possibility throughout the month. Pack accordingly and don’t build your trip around outdoor café sitting.
The crowd situation is actually one of December’s strongest arguments. Girona gets overwhelmed in summer, particularly since the Game of Thrones tourism peaked and never really came back down. In December you can walk the medieval walls, cross the famous Eiffel Bridge and wander the Jewish Quarter without performing an obstacle course around tour groups. The Cathedral, the Arab Baths, the old city itself – they feel like they actually belong to people again rather than to content creation.
Most things stay open, though hours tighten. The major monuments keep regular schedules outside of Christmas week itself, when some close or run reduced hours. The Christmas market sets up around the Cathedral steps and is genuinely charming rather than commercialised – smaller than Barcelona’s equivalent, more local in feel. Restaurants along the Rambla and in the old quarter stay busy with locals, which is usually a decent sign.
Is it worth visiting? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you’re interested in architecture, history and eating well without the surrounding circus, December Girona delivers properly. El Celler de Can Roca books up regardless of season, but the city has enough serious food options to keep you very happy. If you need beach weather, reliable sunshine or a buzzing nightlife scene, this is not your month.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the old city itself rather than near the station. The medieval quarter is compact, and on cold or wet evenings you’ll be genuinely grateful not to be navigating twenty minutes back to your hotel in the dark and rain.
