# Cassis in March: The Honest Version

Look, March in Cassis is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. The Provence coast can throw brilliant crisp sunshine at you one week and sustained grey drizzle the next. Temperatures sit somewhere between 9 and 15 degrees most days, occasionally warmer if you’re lucky, and the Mistral wind has a habit of showing up uninvited and making everything feel significantly colder than it actually is. Pack layers. Seriously, pack more layers than you think you need.

That said, there’s a version of March in Cassis that’s quietly wonderful. The harbour is genuinely calm. The place hasn’t yet been discovered by the summer crowds, the restaurant terraces aren’t chaotic, and you can actually hear yourself think while sitting with a glass of local white wine looking at those ridiculous cliffs. The calanques hiking is legitimately excellent this time of year — cooler temperatures make the trails far more manageable, and the landscape has a dramatic, slightly moody quality that frankly suits the scenery better than August’s baked-earth version.

Most of the core restaurants and shops around the port stay open, though some of the more seasonal places are still shuttered. Don’t expect everything to be running at full capacity. The boat trips into the calanques may have limited schedules depending on the operator, so check ahead before you build your whole trip around one.

Who should go? Hikers, people who genuinely like a quiet harbour town without performance attached to it, photographers who prefer atmosphere over sunshine, couples who find packed tourist spots exhausting. If you need guaranteed warmth and a beach holiday energy, March probably isn’t your moment here.

Worth it? Yes, with adjusted expectations. It’s a beautiful place and cheaper, emptier, and more authentically itself than it will be in June.

**Practical tip:** Book your calanques boat excursion directly with operators in the port as soon as you arrive — March schedules are shorter and they fill faster than you’d expect for what feels like the off-season.
