Visiting Cassis in August
# Cassis in August: Beautiful, Busy, and Borderline Overwhelming
Look, Cassis is genuinely one of the most beautiful places on the French Riviera. The limestone cliffs, the turquoise calanques, the little harbour with its boats bobbing around — it’s the real deal. But August? You need to go in with your eyes open.
**What it’s actually like**
Hot. Properly hot. You’re looking at temperatures regularly nudging 30°C or above, with the kind of dry, relentless Mediterranean heat that feels great for the first hour and exhausting by noon. Rainfall is minimal — July and August are the driest months on the calendar here, so you’re unlikely to see much beyond the occasional dramatic thunderstorm rolling in off the sea. Pack sunscreen you’ll actually use.
**The crowd situation**
This is where honesty matters. Cassis in August is absolutely rammed. The town is small — genuinely small — and it cannot comfortably absorb the volume of visitors it receives at peak summer. The harbour restaurants have queues, parking is a nightmare (the park-and-ride exists for a reason, use it), and the calanques walking trails get so busy that access is sometimes restricted due to fire risk. The beaches are packed by 10am.
**What’s open**
Everything. Every restaurant, every boat tour, every wine cave. The local Cassis white wine is excellent and the tastings are running at full capacity. It’s genuinely a functioning, lively place rather than a ghost town.
**Is it worth it, and for whom?**
If you want guaranteed sunshine, a lively atmosphere, and you don’t mind sharing the experience with half of Europe — yes, absolutely. It suits people who book ahead, wake up early, and treat crowds as part of the summer experience rather than a ruining factor. If solitude and effortless access matter to you, come in May or September instead.
**One practical tip**
Get to the calanques before 9am. Seriously. That two-hour window before the heat and the crowds arrive is when Cassis earns every bit of its reputation.
