# Cassis in December: The Honest Version

Look, nobody’s selling you Cassis in December, and that’s kind of the point.

The weather is genuinely uncertain. You might get crisp, brilliant sunshine with that particular Provençal light that makes the limestone cliffs look almost absurdly beautiful. You might also get grey skies, a biting mistral wind that comes screaming off the hills and makes the harbour feel genuinely hostile, and enough rain to make you question your life choices. December here averages around 8-12°C, but the mistral changes everything – a sunny 10°C with that wind feels brutal. There’s no honest way to promise you good weather, and anyone who does is lying.

The crowds, though. Almost nonexistent. The harbour, which in summer is an absolute circus of tourists and overpriced rosé, becomes something that actually resembles a real town. Fishermen use the boats for fishing rather than posing. Locals eat in the restaurants. You can walk the port in the morning and have it largely to yourself, which is either wonderful or slightly melancholy depending on your disposition.

What’s open is the real question. The town itself functions – you’ll find a handful of restaurants open, the market still runs on Wednesday and Friday mornings, and the bakeries obviously don’t close. But some restaurants and shops either shut entirely or run reduced hours, and you should check before making anything the centrepiece of your trip. The calanques are technically accessible on foot, though boat tours are largely finished for the season. The hike into the calanques in winter is actually magnificent if it’s clear – no heat, no crowds, the sea an impossible blue.

Is it worth it? For solitude-seekers, off-season walkers, people who want Provence without the theatre of it – genuinely yes. For people who need a buzzing destination with guaranteed sunshine, honestly no.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation somewhere with a fireplace or proper heating and treat any good-weather day as a bonus rather than an expectation. That mental adjustment makes the whole trip.
