Visiting Rethymno in March
# Rethymno in March: Honest Thoughts
March in Rethymno is genuinely unpredictable, and that’s the first thing you should know. You might get a week of soft sunshine and 17°C where you’re eating lunch outside feeling quietly smug. You might also get three days of sideways rain and wind coming off the Aegean that makes the Venetian harbour look more like a Baltic port. Locals shrug at both. Pack accordingly and don’t build your trip around beach days, because March is not reliably that kind of month.
What March does give you is the old town almost entirely to yourself. The fortress, the narrow streets around the Rimondi Fountain, the covered market — you can actually linger in these places without navigating around tour groups or fighting for a table. The historic centre is genuinely beautiful and walkable, and experiencing it at a human pace feels like a small privilege compared to what July looks like.
The practical reality is that some things are still shuttered. Certain beach tavernas, water sports outfits and seasonal hotels won’t open until Easter or later. But the town itself functions fine. Cafés are full of locals, the bakeries are excellent, museums are open, and you’ll find decent restaurants without any trouble. The Cretans are there living their actual lives rather than performing hospitality at scale.
Worth visiting? Yes, but for specific people. If you want atmosphere over swimming, history over sunbathing, and lower prices with genuine quiet, March works well. Solo travellers, couples, walkers and anyone interested in Cretan food rather than poolside cocktails will feel at home. Families hunting beach holidays should probably wait.
One practical tip: bring a proper rain jacket rather than just a light layer. You’ll likely need it for at least part of the trip, and being caught wet in a seaside wind when everywhere sensible is closed for the afternoon is exactly as miserable as it sounds. Sort the jacket and the rest of the uncertainty becomes manageable.
