# Marbella in May: The Sweet Spot Before It Gets Silly

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Marbella, and I’ll tell you why without trying to sell you anything.

The weather sits around 22°C, which sounds modest until you’re actually there. It’s warm enough to sit outside for long lunches, comfortable enough to actually walk around without dissolving, and the sea is still a bit brisk for swimming but nobody’s stopping you. You’ll get some rain — about 25mm across the month, typically arriving as short sharp showers rather than full grey days — so pack a light layer and don’t stress about it.

The crowds are manageable, which matters enormously in a place that becomes genuinely unpleasant in August. The beach isn’t rammed. You can walk the Old Town without being funnelled through other people’s selfies. Restaurant tables exist without week-long reservations. Puerto Banús still has its yachts and its peacocking, but the density of people doing all of it hasn’t hit critical mass yet.

Everything is open. This isn’t shoulder season in the apologetic sense — hotels, beach clubs, restaurants are all fully operational and actually glad to see you. You’re not arriving to find half the place shuttered or staff who haven’t quite woken up for the season yet.

**Who is May actually for?** Couples, solo travellers, anyone who wants a genuinely relaxed trip with reliable sunshine but without the full circus. Families work well here too — kids can be at the beach without heatstroke logistics. It’s not for people who want maximum buzz and don’t care about queuing for everything.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation slightly inland or in the Old Town rather than directly on the Golden Mile. You’ll pay noticeably less, you’ll be near better food, and the beach is still five minutes away. In August the location premium almost makes sense. In May it absolutely doesn’t.

Go in May. You’ll come back wondering why anyone chooses July.
