Visiting Bonifacio in December
Visiting Bonifacio in December
# Bonifacio in December: The Off-Season Gamble
Look, December in Bonifacio is genuinely hard to predict, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Southern Corsica sits at a latitude where winter weather can go either way – you might get crisp, clear days where the white limestone cliffs look absolutely stunning in that low winter light, or you might get grey skies, wind off the Strait, and rain that settles in for three days straight. There’s no getting around that uncertainty.
What you can predict is the atmosphere. Bonifacio in December is essentially a ghost town compared to summer, and depending on your personality, that’s either a selling point or a dealbreaker. The old upper town still has its drama – those impossibly perched buildings over the cliffs don’t stop being impressive just because the crowds have gone. You can actually stand at the Grain de Sable viewpoint without someone’s selfie stick in your face.
The practical reality though is that a significant chunk of the town simply closes. Restaurants operate on reduced days or shutter completely. Several boat tour operators offering trips to the sea caves and the Îles Lavezzi are done until spring. You’re not getting the full Bonifacio experience – you’re getting the bones of it.
That said, the Lavezzi are a national nature reserve and some operators do still run trips when conditions allow, so it’s worth checking rather than assuming.
Who should come in December? Honestly, photographers, people who’ve already done Corsica in summer and want something different, or anyone who just wants to walk those coastal paths without earning an elbow to the ribs. If you’re travelling with kids expecting a buzzy beach holiday, wrong month, wrong destination.
Worth it? Conditionally yes. The town has genuine soul when stripped back, the accommodation is dramatically cheaper, and you might just luck into perfect weather.
**Practical tip:** Don’t assume restaurants are open. Check ahead specifically, even for places that appear to have a web presence, because many update their seasonal hours poorly.
