Visiting Vilamoura in April

# Vilamoura in April: What It’s Actually Like

April in Vilamoura sits in that slightly awkward shoulder season where you genuinely don’t know what you’re going to get. Pack for both sunshine and disappointment, because Portugal’s Algarve in early spring can deliver either on the same afternoon. Temperatures typically hover around 18-22°C on good days, which feels lovely if you’re from Manchester but might leave you shivering if you were banking on beach weather. Rain is genuinely possible, sometimes for several days running, so if your entire trip revolves around lying on Praia da Falésia looking bronzed, you’re taking a gamble.

That said, there’s a real argument for April that the tourist brochures don’t oversell enough: the place is actually breathable. The marina is busy but not suffocating. You can get a table at a decent restaurant without a reservation made three weeks in advance. The golf courses – and there are serious, excellent golf courses here – are in good condition and far less congested than summer. If golf is your reason for visiting, April might honestly be the sweet spot of the whole year.

The beach clubs and some of the more seasonal bars are starting to open or just cracking their doors, so you won’t find everything firing on all cylinders. The casino runs year-round, the marina restaurants are largely open, and the supermarkets obviously don’t close for winter. But that buzzing, hedonistic summer atmosphere? It’s not quite there yet.

Easter week is the exception – prices spike, families descend, and it briefly feels like July arrived early. Check the dates before you book because it shifts the equation considerably.

Worth visiting in April? Yes, genuinely, but for specific people. Golfers, couples wanting a relaxed long weekend, anyone who prioritises wandering over sunbathing, and people who find August in the Algarve genuinely overwhelming. Not ideal if you need guaranteed heat and a packed social scene.

**Practical tip:** Bring layers you can actually use, not just “just in case” layers. A decent waterproof jacket earns its place in your bag every single trip before May.
