Where to Stay in Olhao
Where to Stay in Olhao
Olhão doesn’t have the polished tourist infrastructure of Lagos or Albufeira, which is actually a good thing if you’re watching your wallet. The town runs on fishing and local life, and that authenticity keeps prices honest compared to the flashier Algarve resorts further west.
The best area to base yourself is the old Moorish quarter, locally called the Bairro Islâmico, clustered around the waterfront market buildings. Staying within walking distance of the mercado means you can grab breakfast from the fish stalls, catch ferries to the barrier islands of Armona and Culatra without burning money on taxis, and eat at the small tascas where fishermen actually eat. Guesthouses and budget rooms in this zone tend to run between 40 and 65 euros per night, particularly if you book a week or more in advance during shoulder season in May or October.
Avoid booking anything that markets itself as being near Faro Airport as a selling point. Those properties often sit in featureless outskirt zones with no walking access to anything worth seeing, and you’ll spend money on transport that cancels out any savings on the room rate.
For genuinely budget travellers, look at privately run guesthouses rather than the handful of small hotels. Portuguese family-run alojamento local properties frequently offer simple rooms with shared or private bathrooms at prices the booking platforms haven’t inflated yet. Hostel options exist but are limited, so book early in summer.
Mid-range budget travellers should target apartments rather than hotel rooms. A self-catering apartment near the market district lets you buy from the stalls and cook, which cuts daily costs dramatically given how excellent and cheap the local seafood is raw versus cooked in a tourist restaurant.
The one booking mistake people consistently make is choosing Olhão purely as a cheaper base to visit Faro, then discovering the town itself deserves their full attention. They underbook their nights, rush the island day trips, and miss the evening atmosphere entirely. Give it at least three nights.
