Look, March in Cascais is genuinely lovely, but you need to go in with realistic expectations rather than visions of sun-drenched terraces and cocktails by the sea.

The weather sits around 15 degrees, which sounds fine on paper and sometimes genuinely is. You’ll get bright, clear days where the light off the Atlantic is absolutely stunning and you’ll feel smug about avoiding the summer crowds. But that 45mm of rainfall has to land somewhere, and it often arrives in proper Atlantic bursts – grey, gusty, and relentless for a day or two at a stretch. Pack a decent waterproof and don’t let a bad forecast ruin your trip, because conditions change fast here.

The town itself is quiet in the best possible way. Cascais in July is charming but rammed. In March, you can actually walk the old streets, sit in a café without competing for tables, and browse the market without being shoulder-to-shoulder with everyone else. Restaurants are open and relaxed, locals are around, and you get something closer to real life rather than tourist performance. The seafront, the citadel, the Boca do Inferno cliffs – you can experience all of it without the circus.

Most things are open, though hours can be reduced on weekdays. The cultural centre, the museums, the train connection from Lisbon – all functioning normally. It’s not a shuttered ghost town like some coastal places in winter.

Who is this month actually for? Honestly, it suits people who like walking, history, good food, and a slower pace. Couples, older travellers, solo visitors, anyone who finds peak-season crowds exhausting. It’s less ideal if you’re bringing kids expecting beach days or if guaranteed sunshine is non-negotiable for your enjoyment.

**One practical tip:** the train from Lisbon’s Cais do Sodré takes about 40 minutes and is cheap, reliable, and genuinely scenic along the coast. Stay in Cascais rather than commuting from Lisbon – the town has a completely different feel in the evenings once the day-trippers leave, and that’s honestly the best version of it.
