Visiting Olhao in June

# Olhão in June: What to Actually Expect

June is when the Algarve starts properly waking up, and Olhão is no exception. The town shifts gear noticeably from its quiet spring pace into something livelier, though it hasn’t yet hit the peak chaos of July and August.

**The weather situation is genuinely good, with caveats.** Temperatures typically sit in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius, occasionally nudging thirty. It’s warm, sunny, and honestly lovely for most of the month. That said, early June can still throw a cooler or overcast day at you, particularly in the first week or two. Rainfall is low but not impossible – don’t be shocked if you get one grey day. Pack one layer you won’t resent carrying.

**Crowds are building but manageable.** This is honestly one of June’s biggest selling points for Olhão specifically. The town itself was never a massive tourist magnet compared to Albufeira or Lagos, so the increase feels less brutal. The famous covered market by the waterfront stays enjoyable. The ferries out to Armona and Culatra islands get busier at weekends, but you’re not fighting hordes yet. Go on a Tuesday. You’ll thank yourself.

**Everything is open.** Restaurants, boat trips, the market – all operating properly. This is worth saying because shoulder season in smaller Algarve towns can mean shuttered places and reduced hours. June doesn’t have that problem.

**Is it worth it and for whom?** Absolutely yes if you like the idea of the Algarve without losing your mind. Olhão attracts people who prefer a functioning fishing town to a resort, and June suits that crowd well. It’s good for couples, people who want to actually eat fresh seafood among locals rather than tourists, and anyone who finds August genuinely unbearable. Families will be fine but kids chasing waterpark energy will be bored.

**One practical tip:** Book ferry tickets to the islands in advance at weekends, or just go early in the morning. The queues by mid-morning on a Saturday in June are already teaching you patience you didn’t ask for.
