Visiting Olhao in May

Visiting Olhao in May

# Olhão in May: Worth It?

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Olhão, and I’d tell you that even if I worked for a tourism board, which I don’t.

**What it actually feels like**

The weather is warm but not yet punishing. You’re looking at temperatures somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties most days, occasionally nudging higher, with evenings still comfortable enough to sit outside without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. That said, May isn’t guaranteed sunshine – the Algarve gets the odd grey stretch or brief shower, particularly in the first half of the month. Pack a light layer and don’t be surprised if one afternoon turns overcast. It won’t ruin your trip, but don’t assume it’s a sure thing.

**The crowd situation**

This is honestly where May earns its reputation. School holidays haven’t started in most of Europe, so the crush of summer hasn’t arrived yet. The mercado, the waterfront, the ferry over to Armona or Culatra – all of it is accessible without having to fight for space or pay inflated prices. Olhão is less touristic than Tavira or Lagos anyway, but in May that feels even more pronounced in the best way. You’ll see people actually living here rather than performing a postcard.

**What’s open and running**

Essentially everything. The market is operational, boats are running to the barrier islands, restaurants are open and staffed. The islands themselves are brilliant in May – quiet beaches, warm enough to swim if you’re not fussy, and none of the August sardine-tin energy.

**Who this suits**

People who like good food and a working port town atmosphere without needing a beach party. Couples, anyone 30-plus, slow travellers. Less ideal if you need guaranteed scorching heat every single day.

**One practical tip**

Book the ferry times in advance or check them the night before. Schedules to the islands can be limited outside peak season, and missing the last boat back would make for a very expensive water taxi.
