Visiting Olhao in July

# Olhão in July: What You’re Actually Getting Into

Let’s be straight with you: July in Olhão is hot. Properly, relentlessly hot. We’re talking high 30s Celsius on regular days, occasionally nudging 40, with an intensity that makes afternoon sightseeing feel genuinely unpleasant rather than just uncomfortable. Rainfall is essentially a rumour. You might see a brief dramatic storm, you almost certainly won’t. Pack for heat and pack nothing else.

The crowds are real but perhaps not in the way you’re imagining. Olhão itself isn’t Albufeira. It doesn’t get the full package-holiday stampede, partly because it lacks a proper beach of its own. What it gets is a steady flow of slightly more discerning visitors, plus Portuguese families on holiday, plus day-trippers coming through for the ferry to Armona and Culatra islands. The famous market buildings along the waterfront get busy by mid-morning, the ferry queues stretch noticeably, and the good cafe tables disappear fast. It’s not overwhelming, but it’s noticeably fuller than shoulder season.

Everything is open, enthusiastically. Restaurants are running full hours, the fish and vegetable markets are operating properly, boat trips are plentiful, and the island beaches are absolutely at their liveliest. If you want Olhão functioning at maximum capacity, July delivers that.

Is it worth visiting in July? Honestly, it depends entirely on your heat tolerance. If you genuinely enjoy extreme warmth, like eating outside in the evenings, and plan your days around an early start and a long midday rest, you’ll have a brilliant time. The evening atmosphere along the waterfront is genuinely lovely, the seafood is exceptional, and the islands feel almost tropical. If you wilt past 28 degrees, September will make you considerably happier.

**One practical tip:** Take the first ferry of the morning to Culatra or Armona, around 8am, before the heat builds and before everyone else has the same idea. You’ll get two or three hours of perfect beach conditions before July does its worst.
