# Selçuk in October: What It’s Actually Like
October is quietly one of the better times to visit Selçuk, and most people haven’t figured that out yet, which works in your favour.
The temperature sitting around 25°C means you can actually walk around Ephesus without wanting to lie down and die. Summer visitors are doing that walk in 38-degree heat with no shade and paying full price for the privilege. In October you’re comfortable, the light is genuinely beautiful in the late afternoon, and you can linger at the Terrace Houses without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. The 73mm of rainfall sounds alarming but it doesn’t arrive as a solid month of grey misery — you’re more likely to get a few proper downpours and then sunshine again. Pack a light layer and something waterproof and you’ll be fine.
Crowds drop noticeably from the August madness but Ephesus never truly empties because tour buses don’t stop running in October. What changes is the composition — fewer overwhelmed families dragging exhausted children, more people who are actually interested in what they’re looking at. The site still gets busy mid-morning when the cruise crowds arrive from Kuşadası, so go early or late afternoon and the difference is significant.
Everything you’d want is open. The Ephesus Archaeological Museum in town is excellent and often overlooked. The Basilica of St John is worth more of your time than most people give it. The surrounding village itself is small and unhurried, which is either charming or boring depending on who you are.
Worth it for whom? History people, photographers, anyone who did Greece in summer and wants the same ancient-world energy without the chaos. Couples, solo travellers, anyone who likes wandering without an agenda. Less ideal if you’re bringing young kids who need beach weather — Kuşadası nearby offers that, but October water temperatures are starting to drop.
**Practical tip:** Buy your Ephesus ticket online the night before. The queue at the gate in the morning is a genuine waste of your time and easily avoided.
