Visiting Praia da Luz in March
# Praia da Luz in March
Look, March in Praia da Luz is genuinely a bit of a lottery. The Algarve can absolutely throw a glorious week at you – crisp sunny days, maybe 17 or 18 degrees, that ridiculous golden light bouncing off the red cliffs – but it can just as easily deliver a solid run of grey skies, blustery winds off the Atlantic, and enough rain to make you question your life choices. Both versions happen regularly and there’s really no way to know which you’ll get until you’re there.
What you can count on is the quiet. This is a small village at the best of times, and in March it’s genuinely sleepy. The beach is practically yours. You can walk the cliff path to Rocha Negra with zero crowds, sit in the main square without fighting for a table, and actually feel like you’re in a real place rather than a resort. For some people that’s exactly the point.
The flip side is that the village doesn’t exactly buzz. A reasonable number of restaurants and bars stay open year-round because there’s a settled expat and local community keeping things ticking, but don’t expect everything to be running. Some places are still shuttered waiting for Easter to flip the switch. The beach bars are mostly closed. You’re not coming here for nightlife.
Who should actually come in March? Honestly, retired visitors and remote workers get the best deal here. If you can be flexible about weather and your idea of a good day includes a long coastal walk, a decent lunch, and not speaking to very many people, this genuinely delivers. Couples wanting somewhere peaceful will probably love it. Families with kids who need sunshine and entertainment might find it a stretch if the weather turns.
The practical tip worth knowing: bring layers you actually mean it, not just a light jacket. Evenings get properly cold and the wind coming in off the sea has opinions. Even on sunny days the temperature drops sharply once the sun goes down, and you’ll be glad of something warm.
