Visiting Praia da Luz in April

# Praia da Luz in April

Look, April in Praia da Luz is genuinely one of those months where you roll the dice a bit, and that’s fine as long as you know what you’re signing up for.

The weather is the classic Algarve spring situation — it can be absolutely gorgeous, with temperatures nudging 18-20°C and that low Atlantic light making everything look like a painting, or it can be grey, blustery and surprisingly cold for a few days in a row. Often it’s both within the same week. Rainfall is unpredictable. You might get a completely dry trip, or you might get three soggy days that make the beach feel pointless. Pack a decent jacket and mentally prepare for both outcomes. The sea is cold. Nobody is swimming unless they’re very committed or very young.

What April does deliver is the village in a genuinely pleasant state. Crowds are light. Praia da Luz is a small, quiet resort at the best of times, but in April it has a real neighbourhood feeling rather than a tourist one. Restaurants are open — most of the main spots along the seafront have come back to life after the quieter winter months, though one or two smaller places might still be running reduced hours or closed on weekdays. The beach is walkable and peaceful. You’ll share it with dog walkers and the occasional kite surfer rather than sun lounger armies.

Is it worth going? Honestly, yes — but specifically if you want to walk the coastal paths, eat well without queuing, rent a car and explore places like Burgau and Sagres without the summer scramble, or just genuinely decompress somewhere that isn’t trying too hard. It’s not a beach holiday in the traditional sense at this time of year. If two weeks of guaranteed pool weather is the whole point, wait until June.

**Practical tip:** Book a place with outdoor space or a terrace anyway. On the good days — and there will be good days — you’ll be very glad you did, because those evenings are something else entirely.
