# Durres in February: The Off-Season Reality

Let me be straight with you about February in Durres: this is Albania’s main beach resort town, and the beach is absolutely not the reason you’re coming in winter.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. February sits in the heart of the Adriatic coast’s cooler, wetter season — you’re looking at temperatures roughly between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius, and rain is a real possibility on any given day. It’s not brutal cold, but it’s grey, damp, and occasionally miserable in that specific coastal way where the wind cuts through everything. Don’t pack for sunshine. Pack layers and waterproofs and mentally prepare for both.

What’s actually going on in town is the more interesting story. Durres in February is essentially a functioning Albanian city rather than a tourist destination, which is either a problem or a feature depending on what you want. The crowds from summer — and they genuinely get overwhelming in July and August — are completely gone. You’ll walk the amphitheatre ruins with maybe a handful of other visitors. The archaeological museum stays open and is absolutely worth your time; it holds one of the best collections of Illyrian and Roman artefacts in the Balkans and most people walk straight past it in summer chasing the beach.

Restaurants along the seafront will have reduced hours or be shuttered entirely, so eat where locals eat, which honestly means better food and lower prices anyway. The old bazaar area has life to it year-round.

Is it worth visiting in February? For history lovers, yes. For anyone wanting a quick, cheap city break from Tirana without the coastal summer chaos, also yes. For beach holidays, absolutely not — come back in June.

**One practical tip:** Durres train and bus connections to Tirana run regularly year-round, but check accommodation carefully before booking. Several hotels operate skeleton staff or close entirely between November and March. Call ahead or verify recent reviews rather than assuming somewhere listed online is actually operational when you arrive.
